- 1 Match on Bumble. Makes contact as "Maria Isabella," quickly moves the conversation off-platform to WhatsApp.
- 2 Build trust over weeks. Daily contact, video calls, romantic connection, future travel plans. Sends government ID documents to appear credible.
- 3 First money request. Asks for a small transfer via Remitly or PayPal, often framed as something minor (clothing, personal items). May route through a third party described as a family member.
- 4 Travel plan as setup. Agrees to visit the victim. Victim may purchase flight tickets. Creates expectation and emotional investment.
- 5 Last-minute emergency. On the supposed day of travel, claims a visa problem or other emergency at the departure airport. Does not travel. May request additional funds to "resolve" the situation.
